Any network gurus?

Background:
Had an Netcomm NB5 ADSL2+ modem attatched to an old Intel hub for yonks. Internet worked fine for both computers. Then, just a few days ago, we got a wireless router (WL-520GC, 4 LAN ports, 1 WAN port) to replace the hub. The modem is plugged into the WAN port, computers into the LAN ports. Wireless EEE is on occasionally. Internet works perfectly, fast, wonderful. The modem is in bridged mode (thanks weesals!).

Issue:
With no change in configuration whatsoever, no new computers turned on, no cables changed... the internet drops. Local network, including wireless, still works fine. And, even when I disconnect the modem and plug it straight into a computer, the net still does not work. Generally, a power cycle of the modem followed by a reset of the router brings the net back.

Any ideas?

PS: I'll post an error message when the net goes down again. I forgot which error it actually was...

Update: Peer is not responding is the error message the router gives when connecting through the modem. I'm guessing "peer" means "dodgy nb5 modem".

Drops and then re-enables? Or just drops and needs a modem reboot to re-enable?
Try another filter

Needs a modem reboot. And it's weird that it drops the local connection, not just the ADSL2+ connection. (ie: no pings, no web interface)

What do you mean by another filter?

as in phone line to filter and filter to modem

Filter allows phone's and inet at the same time

But the internet has been working perfectly for years with the hub. Unless purchasing the wifi router caused our line filters to overheat and explode, it seems unlikely that that's the issue.

(But thanks for the help, anyway! )

Currently, I have quite possibly the least elegant setup ever. I've abandoned the idea of using the wifi router as a wired router for now, and until I can get a new modem, I've got the modem, computers and wifi router connected to the old hub (10Mb/s). The wifi router runs on a different network, with the modem as its gateway. Two layers of NATs to travel through, just to get to the net. Also, I can't access the modem or any of the desktop computers from the EEE, because it's on a different network.

Ah well... it seems to work for the net...

(yes, that is our current mess)

UPDATE: the network works, whoo! though the internet just died again (reboot fixed it again)... -scratches chin-

I second modem firmware
Youve updated the firmware of the router right? (im running 2.0.0.7 which i think is the newest)

I think you have the router logging into your ADSL account, check the log in the router when it drops out, see if that can give you some idea of whats happening (should be at http://192.168.1.1/Main_LogStatus_Content.asp)

There are no recent firmware updates on the site... the only one that will work with our modem says not to use it if I've got my current firmware version.

How do I actually find the router firmware version?

System Settings->Firmware Upgrade
or go to http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_FirmwareUpgrade_Content.asp
(should have a text box called "Firmware Version")

if you havnt upgraded to the latest, you technicaly shouldnt be able to use your router to login to ADSL at all, from what ive heard, australia uses CHAP encryption, which that ASUS router doesnt support with old firmware

Ah, thanks very much. But it's 2.0.0.7...

So the firmware seems up-to-date.

UPDATE!

The NB5 is absolutely PATHETIC.

If it detects the Asus wifi router on the network, IT COMMITS SEPPUKU FROM THE SHAME OF BEING NEAR A DEVICE OF ANOTHER MANUFACTURER!

I am *seriously* not kidding. This is rubbish. This is horrible. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM! BAD BAD BAD! Everything else (local network, wifi) works perfectly, NB5 randomly fails after half an hour!

How do I know it's the NB5? I just put them on DIFFERENT network cards on my computer. Yes, I went to the bother of installing an old network card JUST TO SEPARATE THEM. The NB5 STILL KILLS ITSELF! AAAAAARGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM. DO NOT BUY NETCOMM.
